The Name

Zayd زَيْد

"Growth, abundance, one who progresses and increases in goodness"

Zayd is one of the most honoured names in Islamic history. Its root (ز-ي-د) appears throughout the Qur'an, tied to Allah's promise of increase — in blessings, guidance, and goodness for those who are grateful.

وَإِذْ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكُمْ لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ

Wa idh ta'adhdhana rabbukum la-in shakartum la-azīdannakum

"And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed: If you are grateful, I shall surely increase you."

— Surah Ibrahim, 14:7

Two great companions named Zayd

Companion of the Prophet ﷺ

Zayd ibn Harithah

Among the earliest converts to Islam, he was raised in the household of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and beloved as his adopted son. He led seven military expeditions on behalf of the Muslim community, and was martyred at the Battle of Mu'tah in 629 CE — falling in battle while still holding the army's standard. He is the only companion mentioned by name in the entire Qur'an.

Scribe of the Qur'an

Zayd ibn Thabit

As personal scribe of the Prophet ﷺ, he transcribed the Qur'anic revelations directly as they were received. After the Prophet's passing, he was entrusted with the historic task of gathering the entire Qur'an into a single, standardised volume — preserving the text for every generation that followed. He later served as chief authority on Qur'anic matters and as judge of Medina.
